Detective Kevin A. Coppin

Detective Coppin began his law enforcement career in 1988 when he became an officer with the West Palm Beach Police Department, following in the footsteps of his brother and uncle. During his 22-year career with West Palm Beach he was promoted through the ranks and retired in 2012 with the rank of Captain. At the time of his retirement he was the Bureau Commander of the Special Investigations / Criminal Investigations Division responsible for supervising all investigations initiated by the agency.

While with the West Palm Beach Police Department Detective Coppin earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration.  Upon retirement Kevin attended St. Thomas University School of Law and received his Juris Doctor degree in 2016. Detective Coppin is certified by the United States Attorney’s Office as an expert witness and has provided testimony on numerous occasions to defense counsel regarding criminal cases in organized street gang crime and crack cocaine related offenses.

Detective Coppin served West Palm Beach on the Hostage Negotiation Team, Internal Affairs Division, Community Policing Division, Criminal Apprehension Team, and Organized Crime Task Force.

Detective Coppin recently joined the Juno Beach Police Department and had this to say …

“In the brief time that I have been with the Juno Beach Police Department I have been very impressed with the quality and professionalism of the men and women I am now working with. They are highly motivated and work diligently to ensure the safety of the Town’s residents, business owners and visitors. I am enjoying working with each of them to ensure that when there is a crime, it is fully investigated and in most cases, solved. Nothing pleases me more than to work with law enforcement professionals and to see a victim receive justice. “

Kevin and his wife of 31 years, Lydia, live in West Palm Beach with their daughter Bria and the family dog, Kobie.

Thoughts on public safety …

“Public safety is our most important value because it makes everything else possible. When we feel safe, we get to know our neighbors. When we feel safe, our kids are free to explore. When we feel safe, our businesses can thrive. When we feel safe, our schools can be woven more deeply into the community. When we feel safe we are more open to accept people who look, worship or act differently than us.

Public safety is our most basic community service and the irony is that the better we deliver the service the less people think about it. The children who walk safely to school, the neighbors who walk to the corner store, the commuter who walks home from the bus or train late at night, the senior citizen sitting safely on their front porch at sunset rarely think that they can only enjoy this kind of life because of the protection provided by their local police officers. In our daily life, we usually think about our police when something has gone wrong… When an officer dies or when he or she makes a mistake.

So it takes a special person to be a police officer—a person who can protect and serve, with strength and compassion, often without that recognition—willingly ready to put themselves in harm’s way so others can go about their daily lives.”

— Former Nassau County (NY) Police Commissioner, Lawrence Mulvey
